Martha Witt (USA)

Martha Witt is an accomplished author and translator whose work explores the complex interplay of language and intimacy, particularly in the context of neurodiverse experiences. Her first novel, Broken As Things Are (Holt, 2004; Picador 2005), delves into a unique linguistic bond between two siblings, one with Autism, as they navigate a shared language of sound-driven associations. Witt’s fascination with neurodiverse communication, a theme rooted in her family, has shaped much of her literary output, especially her short stories. She has also established herself as a translator of Italian literature, bringing the works of notable authors such as Luigi Pirandello and Grazia Deledda to English-speaking audiences. Her recent project, The Truth Lies Between, developed during her 2023 Fulbright grant, draws from her family history to explore a young woman’s journey from rural Italy to Brazil post-World War II, where she must navigate new layers of language and identity. Witt’s literary achievements include fellowships at prestigious residencies such as Yaddo and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and awards like the John Gardner Award for Short Fiction. Her work is a testament to her dedication to linguistic nuance and the depth of human connection through language.
