Cristina Ataíde (Portugal)
Born in Viseu, Portugal, in 1951, Cristina Ataíde is a Portuguese sculptor and installation artist who lives and works in Lisbon. A graduate in Sculpture from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts (ESBAL), she has exhibited extensively since the 1980s and is recognized as one of Portugal’s leading contemporary artists. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, video, and site-specific interventions, often responding directly to the social, cultural, and environmental characteristics of a place.
Ataíde’s work explores themes of memory, identity, migration, landscape, and the relationship between humans and nature. She frequently incorporates natural materials and participatory elements, inviting viewers to reflect on the traces people leave on places and the connections that shape collective experience. Her works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia, and are included in major public and private collections, including the Gulbenkian Foundation’s Modern Art Centre. Through poetic, research-based artistic interventions, Cristina Ataíde continues to create meaningful dialogues between people, history, and the environment.
